This guide will show you how to mix the Humatrope HGH injector system that you have chosen, and then how to administer the medication into the body.

It is natural to need a reminder of how to mix the solution when a new vial or cartridge is required. Always remember to check the expiration date before mixing and using a new cartridge or vial.
Usage Instructions for the HumatroPen 6, 12, and 24 mg Pens
Humatrope injectable pens come with replaceable cartridges that require mixing before initial use. Each cartridge comes with a diluent syringe and cap. Please read the provided Humatrope: instructions how to use a HumatroPen before proceeding. Always ensure that the cartridge and pen unit milligram numbers match.
Here are the mixing instructions for the replaceable Humatrope cartridges:
- First Step
Remove and discard the cover from the bottom of the diluent syringe
- Second Step
Hold the Humatrope cartridge in the other hand with the triangles pointing upward, inserting the cartridge straight into the diluent syringe until it stops – DO NOT TWIST
- Third Step
While holding the combined unit firmly in your hands, slowly depress the plunger with your thumb two or three times until all of the diluent has entered the cartridge
- Fourth Step
Once all of the diluent has entered the cartridge, remove your thumb from the syringe and slowly remove the cartridge from the syringe
- Fifth Step
Place the cap on a hard surface and push the syringe into the cap – discard as directed
- Sixth Step
Slowly and gently invert the cartridge back and forth 10 times to mix the solution – DO NOT SHAKE – then let sit for 3 minutes *Always inspect the cartridge to ensure that the solution is not cloudy and does not contain crystals – further mixing may be required
- Seventh Step
Remove the HumatroPen cap to expose the screw that will be attached to the cartridge
- Eighth Step
Attach the white tip of the cartridge to the screw and push together, turning the unit until it is screwed into place and secure
- Ninth Step
Remove the paper tab from the outer end of the injection needle and push the needle straight onto the cartridge screwing it onto the cartridge until it is secure (this will be done prior to each injection)
- Tenth Step
Pull off the outer and inner caps from the needle, saving the outer cap for future use
- Eleventh Step
Prime the cartridge by dialing clockwise to 1.25 mg for 6 mg Pen, 2.5 mg for 12 mg Pen, and 5.0 mg for 24 mg Pen – hold the pen straight up, push the injection button with your thumb until a stream of Humatrope comes up out of the needle and hold for five seconds
Once the Humatrope cartridge instructions have been completed, the unit is now ready for use.
How to Prepare Humatrope in a Vial
The most economical way to purchase Humatrope is in a standard vial that contains the medication in its freeze-dried form. This will also need to be mixed with bacteriostatic solution before use. This sterile water is supplied in a second vial, and a mixing syringe and alcohol prep wipes will be needed before getting started.
Here are the Humatrope mixing instructions:
- First Step
Remove the caps from the vial of Humatrope HGH and bacteriostatic solution and wipe the rubber stoppers with an alcohol prep wipe – allow them to air dry.
- Second Step
Remove the cap from the mixing syringe and set aside. Insert the tip of the needle into the vial of bacteriostatic solution and carefully invert the vial so that it is upside down. Gradually pull the plunger back – filling it the syringe with the instructed amount of fluid. Remove the needle from the vial and set the bottle aside.
- Third Step
Insert the needle of the mixing syringe into the vial of Humatrope HGH. Slightly rotate the bottle to the side, gradually pushing down on the plunger so that the fluid will slide down the side of the vial into the powdered HGH. Remove the needle from the HGH vial and rotate the bottle in a circular motion to mix the solution. DO NOT SHAKE THE VIAL!
- Fourth Step
Replace the cap on the needle and dispose in a Sharps container.
Once these Humatrope instructions for mixing have been completed, you can proceed with the injecting directions below.
Injecting Humatrope – How to Proceed
Once the Humatrope has been prepared by following either of the above instructions, the HGH medication will be ready for injecting into the body. Once again, it is essential always to gather all supplies before getting started. If this is a subsequent injection, please allow the Humatrope to sit out of the refrigerator for 10 minutes before use.
No matter which delivery method you have chosen – pen or vial – you will use an injection site on the body above the belly button and slightly off to the side if giving injections subcutaneously or on the thigh if directed to administer intramuscular injections. This will have been predetermined and discussed with your medical advisor at National HRT.
Once the HumatroPen has been primed, please follow the following Humatrope pen instructions for proper administration:
- Dial the dosage prescribed by turning the dose knob clockwise
- Use an alcohol prep wipe to clean the injection site
- Insert the needle into the skin and place thumb on injection button
- Push down on injection button and hold for 5 seconds before removing
- Confirm that the dose window shows 0 – letting you know that all the medication has been administered
- Recap the needle and remove from the Pen – discarding in the Sharps container
- Replace HumatroPen cap and store in the refrigerator
When using the economical HGH vial, please follow the following Humatrope injection instructions for use:
- Take an unused insulin syringe and remove the cap –setting it aside for further use as directed
- Insert the needle of the insulin syringe into the HGH solution and turn the vial upside down
- Pull back on the plunger slowly until the syringe fills with the directed amount of Humatrope
- Remove the needle from the vial and recap the needle
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol prep wipe
- Remove the cap from the needle and insert the needle into the prepared area of the belly or thigh
- Push down on the stopper in a slow and deliberate motion until the syringe is empty and all of the HGH Humatrope has entered the body
- Withdraw the needle and replace the cap before discarding in a Sharps container
- Return the Humatrope to the refrigerator
A few reminders – always check the Humatrope HGH before each use. Do not use if there are crystals present or if the mixture is cloudy or expired.
